Jamie invited us to go with them to Paul Bunyan's Woodpile on Valentine's Day. I had been planning a bike ride, this February day was turning out to be so warm, but the woodpile sounded like a lot more fun. And being Valentine's Day, it would be good that I spend the time with my Valentines.
The hike to the woodpile, which is actually 30-million-year-old lava formed into 2-foot-by-15-foot columns tipped on their side, is at the top of a 1-mile trail, which is at the end of a 3-1/2-mile dirt road, which is not marked off Highway 6 out of Eureka.
Chieko and Michael on top of one of the woodpiles.
Kali in a precarious ledge on the side of the woodpile.
The top of the trail.
The valley below. If you squint, you can see a little column of steam coming from the IPP steamstack in the far center distance.
First good view of the woodpile.
Up close on the flat side of the "logs."
The other side of the "logs."
Up close.
Up closer.
Emi and Caleb top the ridge above the woodpile.
We're supposed to be falling, but maybe we're belting out "The hills are alive..."
Chieko on a train trestle between Eureka and Elberta.
Austins walking the rails.
Jamie doing her yoga thing.
Emi doing her thing. Hope a train doesn't come barreling down the track.
