Bear River Bird Refuge with Pelicans, Muskrat and More

After general conference, Chieko and I decided to take a little drive to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. By "little," I mean about 70 miles.

I'm not good with bird identification, so take my naming here with a grain of salt. I think this is a red-winged blackbird.

This is a coot. I don't know if it's an old coot.

When we were here in February, there were hundreds, maybe a few thousand swans. Today we saw only these two leftovers.

This is a yellow-headed blackbird. The reeds were full of these today.

I think these are grebes.

Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck.

This is a yellow-headed blackbird. I was trying to get a picture with the setting sun on his head and neck, but this is the best I got.

This is a muskrat. Chieko saw about three of these.

These are scaredy coots.

This is a pelican at takeoff.

This is the same pelican just after takeoff. Look for another bird in this picture.

This end of the wetland had quite a few pelicans.

Pelicans doing a little fishing while a heron looks on.

Chieko with several pelicans in the background, which you can't see, because they're too far away. Maybe if you squint.

I don't usually post sunset pictures, but this seems to be a fitting way to end this day.
