Strawberry Reservoir

According to all the experts we know, Strawberry Reservoir is the best place to fish around here. Steve Knudson even sacrificed his pickup truck in this lake for fishing. And spring, when the ice just starts to melt, is the best time to go, because the fish congregate where there's open water. Last Saturday on one of the outdoor shows, they said the fishing was excellent in the few places where the lake was free of ice, Ladders being one of those places.

So Jackson, Jared, and I headed up there yesterday. I bought two dozen night crawlers at Sportsman's Warehouse Friday night, but of course we left those in the fridge and had to buy more at the Smith's in Heber, along with sandwiches, chips, and candy.

When we arrived, we discovered that between last Saturday and yesterday the ice had completely melted off the whole entire lake.

We caught our first fish on a nightcrawler within about five minutes of arriving at Ladders.

Then, for the next four hours we soaked worms, dipped PowerBait, and tried every lure in our tackle boxes at Ladders, a little stream on the other side of Ladders, and at Chicken Creek West with only one more strike and no more catches.

Jackson had the great idea to just throw rocks at the fish.

Even these pelicans didn't seem to be having a lot of luck.

But the sun was out, we were in shirtsleeves, the company was good, and "The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work."

All in all, we had an enjoyable day.

I like Jackson's idea. I once stood in a river for over an hour with a spear I'd made from a willow branch, trying to stab fat trout. It was funner than real fishing and I didn't have to worry about cleaning and cooking a fish.
